Available now: the new edition of LibRE

Dear visitor,

As you might be aware, last year we published the first issue of our online magazine LibRE. After the success of this first edition, we have decided to publish a second one. We can proudly inform you that the youngest edition of LibRE is now available in two languages.

The English version can be accessed at: http://bit.ly/Libre2_ENGLISH

The Dutch version can be accessed at: http://bit.ly/Libre2_DUTCH

In this second edition we offer a preview of our international Europe Remembers campaign in 2019 and 2020. Behind the scenes, we are working hard already to make this campaign a great success. Among the other stories, LibRE will feature an interview with French historian Olivier Wieviorka, everything you might want to know about the success of the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, and the current development of the guide network of Liberation Route Europe. Furthermore, we take a look at Normandy as one of the leading remembrance destinations in the world.

We hope you enjoy this edition of LibRE and will share it within your own network.

LRE guides accompany 80 Dutch students

Three LRE guides accompany a group of 80 Dutch students this week on their study trip towards Normandy. During their tour, the students will visit several historical locations and monuments, like Pointe du Hoc and the remains of the mulberry harbours. Also, they will bring a visit to the several invasion beaches.

Besides the guides, also some military instructors will be part of the group. The aim of the trip is to increase the awareness about the history of Europa.

(Update: below you will find a small impression of the visit):

Presenting Liberation Route Europe

It has been a busy week for Liberation Route Europe. A part of the team was present in Normandy for the annual D-Day commemorations. Several international journalists were invited by LRE to witness the events and publish about it. The week before, LRE reopened its traveling exhibition ‘Routes of Liberation’ officially at the Normandy beach of Ouistreham.

Another part of team LRE went to Brussels on the 8th of June. In attendance of representatives of several national Tourism Boards, the ideas of the Europe Remembers campaign were presented. In 2019 and 2020, Europe celebrates 75 years of liberation and the end of WWII. As LRE, we will launch an international public campaign to create a broad awareness for these important years.

At the same time, a group of 86 American tourists came to the Netherlands, as part of their ‘Easy Company’ tour across multiple WWII spots in Europe. Hosted by the American WWII Museum in New Orleans, the group had a dinner at Hotel Erica, were LRE historian Jory Brentjes gave a presentation about Dutch railway strikes during Operation Market Garden. Among the audience were two actors of the famous Band of Brothers series.

It has been presented in four countries: Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium, and arrives today in France in Ouistreham Riva-Bella.

Supported by the Normandy Region and the Mémorial de Caen, this exhibition is one of the key event of the 73d anniversary of D-Day.

Press trip ‘Battle of the Bulge’

From the 19th until the 22nd of April, a group of at least six online influencers out of three countries will explore a part of Liberation Route Europe. As the theme of the trip is ‘Battle of the Bulge’, the particpants will be taken to both the Belgian and Luxembourg Ardennes. We will take them along several places of interest in those countries, like war cemeteries (on the picture that is attached to this post, you will see the American war cemetery at Hamm, Luxembourg), museums and points of interest that still refer to the Battle of the Bulge. As a side step, a visit to the American war cemetery at Margraten (Netherlands) is included in this trip.

In order to realise the trip, we work closely together with our partners in the areas mentioned, like Ortal (Luxembourg), the Bastogne War Museum (Belgium) and the Province of Limburg (Netherlands).
